Sustainable Cattle Programme launched in Brazil

A new programme aimed at developing and testing practical mechanisms and tools for more sustainable production methods of cattle in several regions in Brazil was launched in São Paulo in August. The programme was developed by the Brazilian Roundtable on Sustainable Livestock (GTPS) in partnership with Proforest, and brings together 23 local partners, including producer associations, abattoirs, retailers and NGOs.

The ‘Sustainable Cattle in Practice’-programme will run until 2015 and is funded by the Farmer Support Programme. Seven local projects will serve as pilot projects to demonstrate best practice, train technical assistance providers, and test continuous improvement indicators. The programme aims to learn from, build on and share the experiences of GTPS members and partners. Proforest’s role is to co-manage the programme, as well as to develop and test the continuous improvement indicators.

The programme is expected to deliver more guidance on best practice for producers, better access to technical assistance for small and medium-sized cattle ranchers, as well as boost sustainability and transparency in the cattle supply chain in Brazil.
